Don’t assume you need a big blue chip firm. I come from several big blue chip law firms. They do great law and sometimes you need the “brand” or “label” of the big law firm next to you, for instance if you’re going public. But for more routine work, you don’t need such a firm. They are expensive and comprise many layers. So for you to deal with the top dog, you will be paying up to $1,000 per hour, or more. If your budget is one quarter of this, you will mostly be dealing with a junior associate who will not have the business experience you are looking for. Lawyers have special areas in which they work. Do not just go with any lawyer based on familiarity or misguided advertisements. A lawyer should be a chameleon and a brilliant strategist. When the situation calls for firm yet unyielding – he should be able to bring it. When the situation calls for aggressiveness – he should be able to bring that as well. Also, choose a lawyer that puts you first. You are the client and you should be the most important part of the case. He should be able to listen to you. He should know what you want and he should deliver it. In any case, choose a lawyer you are comfortable with. Someone you can be honest with. You don’t want those nasty surprises revealed by the other party. That will leave your lawyer unprepared.
