As a child, I remember going to the gaming center in our neighborhood where for a small price we were allowed to play one set of video game on a gaming station. Those were simple screen games like car racing or bike racing and we enjoyed them like mad. Then one fine day, Mario entered our house and became a much fought over best friend for everybody. Whoever managed to gain the controls for his life in his hands tried his level best to save him while the rest of us watched and cheered excitedly.
Run outside-Gyms and treadmills can get boring. I have personally never been a big fan of gyms. I would choose a trail run ANY day over a workout in the Gym. That is not to say that gyms don’t have their place for the majority of people (I’ll admit to being a hard-core running fanatic). If treadmill cars in a gym is part of your normal routine, then mixing it up between running outside and the gym is an excellent way of spicing things up!

Kids under 8 should compete in events where the swim is around 50 yards, the bike is under 2 miles and the run around 1/4 mile. 9-10 and 11-12 year olds can handle a little bit longer course and the 13 and over often swim 1/3 of a mile, up to an 8 mile bike and 2-3 mile run. It is important that the distances are not so long that it requires intensive training. Your child should feel good as they compete and not be worried about ‘making the distance’.

What to watch for: Watch for crowding at the rear of the pack as riders attempt to move forward to avoid elimination at the line. Some riders will purposely ride at the back to “play the devil” by sprinting at the last second to pass the other riders. Later in the race, the field is smaller and the ability to sprint fast is important. Sometimes racers ease up when crossing the finish line and others pass them before their rear tire hits the finish line.
We’ve all heard that you need five or six meals a day for fat loss. The simple rationale is that digestion requires energy; so spreading your calories over many small meals throughout the day keeps your metabolism humming and your hunger under control. There is one slight problem however, and that is not how frequently you eat but rather what you eat that affects how many calories you burn at mealtime. Let’s say you normally consume 2,200 calories per day. It doesn’t matter how many meals you have eaten; your calorie burn from digestion remains the same. To find out how you can regulate your food consumption, take a week and write down when you feel most hungry. Then adjust your eating patterns accordingly. The key is to pack each meal with foods that provide the greatest metabolic impact.
